The Anna Ahlström and Ellen Terserus Foundation

Once a year, the foundation awards two-year scholarships to female PhD students and PhD graduates at the faculties of humanities and social sciences at Stockholm University.

Grants in the form of scholarships are awarded for academic research, with priority given to disciplines within the humanities.

The Birgit and Gad Rausing Foundation

The foundation’s aim is to promote advanced Swedish academic research in the humanities, primarily in archaeology, history, art history, literary studies and linguistics. Grants are awarded in the form of scholarships. Grants for studies or courses at universities and colleges are not awarded, nor are conference grants, or grants solely for printing and related costs.

The Estrid Ericson Foundation

The Foundation’s purpose is to support academic research. Grants are primarily awarded for research and education in the fields of design, arts and crafts, craftsmanship and industrial design. The Foundation normally awards grants of between 3,000 and 10,000 SEK. Only in exceptional cases may a grant exceed 50,000 SEK. Grants may be awarded for education in Sweden and abroad, study trips, participation in symposia, course fees and courses within the applicant’s own subject area that are not part of their regular education. Grants may also be awarded for organising conferences and symposia, for presenting research findings, and for the publication of specialist literature within the subject areas.

The Swedish Arts Council

The Royal Patriotic Society

Grants are awarded for research in the humanities and social sciences. This primarily covers printing costs, symposia or exhibitions. Grants are not, as a rule, awarded for the following purposes: living expenses; the printing of doctoral theses (exceptions may be made for extraordinary illustration or printing costs); computers and other equipment; studies and courses of various kinds, in Sweden or abroad.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Doctoral students are awarded grants of up to 100,000 kronor, whilst researchers who have completed a doctoral degree are awarded research grants of up to 300,000 kronor. Among the latter, priority is given to those who have obtained their doctoral degree within the last five years. Grants are awarded for a maximum of one year. Electronic application system.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities

The Academy initiates and supports research by organising symposia and conferences, often of an interdisciplinary nature. The majority of the Academy’s research funding goes to various projects, often in collaboration with members, universities or other research funding bodies.

The Letterstedt Society

Grants are awarded primarily for academic work devoted to the comparative study of phenomena in the Nordic countries, for visiting scholars from one Nordic country to another, for organising conferences and seminars of Nordic interest, for the printing of publications of Nordic interest, and for the purchase of literature or other equipment at institutions with a Nordic focus. Grants are not awarded for projects that have already taken place, nor for commemorative volumes or living expenses.

The Längman Cultural Fund

The fund aims, amongst other things, to promote: the humanities, the arts and literature,

including music, dance, film, etc. Grants awarded are generally in the range of 15,000–40,000 SEK.

The Magnus Bergvall Foundation

The Foundation’s primary purpose is to promote scientific research through grants (in the range of 5,000–100,000 SEK) to Swedish scientists and Swedish scientific and cultural institutions, including those in the humanities. Grants for the printing of doctoral theses prior to the defence are not awarded. Nor is funding provided for the applicant’s studies. Grants to cover the costs of conference travel and similar expenses are awarded only in exceptional cases. Funding for the applicant’s own salary costs is not granted, but grants for short-term fees or allowances for specific tasks of importance to the project may be awarded.

The Ridderstad Foundation

The Foundation’s purpose is to promote, through grants, research in the following areas:

Swedish and pan-Nordic press and newspaper history, or other press research with a historical perspective; Swedish, Nordic or pan-European advertising history and related communication research; the history of graphic technology and book craftsmanship through the development of materials, machinery and methods within the main areas of printed matter, bookbinding and illustrations. The C.M. Lerici Foundation

The Lars Hiertas Minne Foundation

The application system is open between 15 August and 1 October. Among other things, the Foundation accepts applications for research projects from individual researchers in all subject areas, with grants ranging from 5,000 to 60,000 SEK. The Riksbank Jubilee Fund (RJ)

The Riksbank Jubilee Fund supports research in the humanities and social sciences. Support is provided in the form of so-called programmes, projects and grants for research infrastructure, as well as for research initiation. STINT (The Foundation for the Internationalisation of Higher Education and Research)

STINT works to build knowledge and expertise in the field of internationalisation and invests in internationalisation projects proposed by researchers, teachers and management at Swedish higher education institutions. STINT works to stimulate change in internationalisation through new forms of collaboration and new partners. For example, the Foundation invests in international collaborations involving early-career researchers and lecturers. STINT offers a number of grant and scholarship programmes to support internationalisation at Swedish higher education institutions.

The Sven and Dagmar Salén Foundation

Two full-year scholarships for humanities research at a university or other research institution in Europe (excluding Sweden) are advertised annually in January. The Foundation primarily awards grants for: project start-ups, interdisciplinary projects, and individual researcher support, such as grants for travel abroad and smaller-scale projects. The Foundation does not provide funding for: general living costs or private expenses; heavy scientific equipment; research projects which, in the Foundation’s assessment, should normally be funded by the existing research organisation; educational scholarships or ‘periodic grants’; or academic studies without a research component.
