After the dissertation defence

After a successful defence of the doctoral thesis or licentiate seminar and a completed coursework of the programme, it is time to apply for a doctoral or licentiate degree. Here you will find information about what needs to be reported in Ladok as well as the application form. For newly graduated doctoral students, there is also information about the conferment ceremony of doctoral degrees.

The basis for the degree certificate

The department should encourage the doctoral student to obtain official transcript of records from student.ladok.se at third-cycle level, in both Swedish and English, so that they have the opportunity to check that the information in Ladok is correct before submitting the application for the degree certificate. If the information is not correct, additional information or corrections must be made at the department.

  • Courses within the third-cycle programme examined at Stockholm University should be continuously documented in Ladok by the course-giving department.
  • Courses taken at other universities that may be credited shall be documented by the department responsible for the subject.
  • Courses at other levels that may be credited shall be documented by the department responsible for the subject.
  • Parts of the course that are reported in Ladok must include credit points. Compulsory parts of the course that are not credit-bearing can alternatively be documented in the individual study plan once they are completed.

When the course part of the third-cycle programme is completed, "All courses completed for licentiate/doctoral degree" should be reported in Ladok, and the date for this should always be the same date as the last course examined.

When the defence has been successfully completed, it should be reported in Ladok. An English translation of the thesis title is mandatory.

Instructions for naming courses at doctoral level

Courses taken during the doctoral programme must be reported in Ladok. Since these will later form the basis for the third-cycle degree certificate, it is important that the names of the courses are correct. Below you will find instructions for the naming of third-cycle courses, which the Student Services have developed together with the education leaders at the faculties.

Swedish course names (or other non-English original language) should be written with an initial capital letter followed by lower case letters. All courses names in a language other than English must have an English translation.

English course names are written with initial capitals in words (all words except articles, conjunctions, prepositions with less than five letters).

The course name should primarily indicate the content of the course/course part - the following should not be included in the course name:

  • how the course is taken (compulsory/elective/optional etc.)
  • form of examination, date, supervisor/examiner/
    course director
  • university/place where the course was taken
  • no descriptions with a colon (:) before the course name (Reading course:/Doctoral course: etc)

If it is necessary to indicate that the course is a reading course, you should first name the course appropriately and then write "reading course" in parenthesess, after the course name:

Example: Theories of Didactics (reading course) instead of Individual reading course: Theories of Didactics.

The course name should not start by Conference:/Symposium: etc. These usually form part of the conference's official name. The entire official name of the conference should be written out, apart from any commonly accepted abbreviation in the name:

The 4th SACR meeting of the Swedish Association for Cytoskeletal Research

The title of the current year's conference should be written out (not the PhD contribution): The cytoskeleton : From the Plasma Membrane to the Nucleus

Where and when the conference was held (conference centre/university/city/other), country, month, date and year: Solbacka, Sweden, 16-18 September 2000.

The doctoral student's activity at the conference should be described in parentheses if applicable: (Poster) or (Paper)

The free text field allows a maximum of 140 characters. If the entire entry does not fit, you should make a reasonable judgment about what can be deleted. An example of an overly compressed naming/title: SACR, Solbacka Sep 2000

Same participation, but with too many characters: The 4th SACR Meeting of the Swedish Association for Cytoskeletal Research, The Cytoskeleton: From the Plasma Membrane to the Nucleus, Solbacka, Sweden,16-18 September 2000 (Poster)

Rekommended course name: The 4th SACR Meeting, The Cytoskeleton: From the Plasma Membrane to the Nucleus, Solbacka, Sweden, 16-18 September 2000 (Poster)

It is important for the department to standardise the naming of internal seminar series. Different seminar series should be distinguished, the same seminar series should be identical in name.

For other questions regarding courses and credit transfers, please contact primarily the director of studies for the doctoral level at the relevant department.

All courses that a doctoral student admitted to Stockholm University takes at doctoral level at any department within Stockholm University are reported as usual in Ladok by the course-giving department: Ladok manual for third-cycle education (in Swedish).

Courses taken at undergraduate/advanced level (at Stockholm University or another university) or doctoral level at another university (nationally or internationally) should be reported as a credit transfer by the relevant department, Ladok manual for credit transfer (in Swedish).

This applies only if the supervisor or equivalent has approved the course for credit transfer, this should be noted in the individual study plan.

Third-cycle degree

After a successful dissertation defence, the doctoral student can apply for a degree certificate.

Doctoral degree

A doctoral degree requires the completion of 240 credits in the subject, of which at least 120 credits must be for an approved scientific thesis. The coursework component may constitute up to 120 credits.

Licentiate degree

A licentiate degree is awarded to a doctoral student who has completed a program of at least 120 credits in a subject at the third-cycle level, or after the doctoral student has completed at least 120 credits of a program leading to a doctoral degree and has had an approved scientific thesis of at least 60 credits.

The licentiate degree is only issued in subjects that, according to the respective general study plan, explicitly lead to this degree.
