Courses and counselling
Doctoral studies provide the opportunity for a solid in-depth study of a subject. This is combined with the independent performance of a research task where new research results and knowledge can be produced.
The doctoral programme lasts four years and leads to a doctoral degree, i.e. the highest academic degree in Sweden.
The programme consists of courses and a thesis, which must account for at least half of the scope of each degree.
In some cases, it is also possible to obtain a licentiate degree, an academic degree at postgraduate level and equivalent to about half a doctoral degree.
Courses on PhD level
The courses are provided by the departments within their respective research subjects. The doctoral student agrees with their supervisor on which courses to include. On our external website, there is a list of the subjects in which doctoral courses are offered, along with links to the departments' course information:

Completed courses are registered in Ladok and in the digital individual study plan for doctoral students (d-ISP).
Supervision
Doctoral students receive supervision and guidance from the departments. Each doctoral student must be assigned at least two supervisors, one of whom is appointed as the main supervisor. A doctoral student who requests it has the right to change supervisors.
Doctoral studies require a significant amount of work, and the doctoral student is ultimately always responsible for their own studies and research.
