Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching

The Center for University Teacher Education (CeUL) works to stimulate engaging and high-quality teaching at all levels at Stockholm University.

We support teachers and institutions to develop teaching and create good learning environments to best facilitate student learning.

Mission and activities

  • We provide qualification and skills development courses in higher education pedagogy for university teachers and pedagogical managers.
  • In addition, we organize a number of competence development activities such as conferences, workshops and higher education theme days.
  • We follow and contribute to research in higher education pedagogy and subject didactics as it contributes to creative and student-activating teaching.
  • With the development of teaching in focus, we run and support various pedagogical development projects at the university.
  • Last but not least, we have the honor of administering the university's honorable pedagogical award Teacher of the Year.

Organizational structure

CeUL is a distributed organization with an administrative office located at the Department of Education. Pedagogical developers and researchers at the Department of Computer and Systems Science, the Department of Subject Didactics, the Department of Education and Didactics, and the Department of Law are also attached to the center. Together we are about 15 people working with teaching and administrative tasks. In addition, we also collaborate with colleagues from across the university within the framework of pedagogical ambassadorship.

Teacher of the Year

Each year, the University recognizes one or more individuals with the Teacher of the Year award. The award is administered by the Center for University Teacher Education (CeUL).

The award is given to teachers who meet the criteria of promoting student learning through outstanding pedagogical achievements, recognized interest and commitment to the development of teaching and recognized teaching skills.

Nomination and award

All students and staff at SU can nominate teachers. There can also be more people nominating in the same form. The nomination period takes place at the beginning of the year.

The prize consists of a diploma and a prize sum of SEK 50,000, which is paid to the winner's department/unit and is to be used for the teacher's continued professional development.

The winners are announced in early June and the award ceremony takes place in conjunction with the installation of professors and the doctoral ceremony.
