Degrees
Students who have completed their studies at Stockholm University can apply for a degree with us. Higher education and all degrees are divided into three levels: first, second and third cycle.
Two types of degrees are awarded at Stockholm University: general degrees in a main field and professional degrees. General and professional degrees can be awarded at both first and second cycle level.
In 2023, 6,915 degrees were awarded, of which 258 were at doctoral level.
The information in Ladok is the basis for issuing a degree
The Swedish and English titles of the courses or parts of courses included in the degree certificate contain information from the Ladok course database.
The first name, surname and personal identity number are retrieved from the Swedish Tax Agency to Ladok. It is the information in Ladok that is stated in the degree certificate and it cannot be changed afterwards. If the surname is marked in the national register, only the surname will be in Ladok. If the student wants all first names to be included in the degree certificate, the student must contact the Swedish Tax Agency for changes before applying for a degree certificate.
Application for a degree certificate
Students can apply for a degree themselves on Ladok for students or by using the form available on the Degrees pages of the external website.
When the degree application is examined, a quality control is carried out to ensure that what the student has studied fulfils the degree requirements according to current regulations. If the application is approved, the student receives their degree certificate. A sub-course or part of a course with a passing grade can be included if it is deemed to be clearly definable. Requests to include a module or part of a course in the degree are stated in the free text field in the degree application. Course content may not overlap, in which case deductions will be made in the degree corresponding to the overlapping credit total.
About diplomas
A degree is proof that a student has acquired knowledge up to a certain level in a particular field, and has demonstrated the ability to think analytically and methodically. When the degree application is examined, a quality control is carried out to ensure that what the student has studied fulfils the degree requirements according to the applicable rules. If the application is approved, the student receives their degree certificate. This gives the student a document of value for the future, either to continue studying and/or researching, or to start working. Two types of degree are awarded at Stockholm University: a general degree in a major field and a professional degree.
- The degree certificate states which degree has been awarded, which courses are included, the grades of the courses and the grading system applied, and the date of completion.
- The diploma is in both Swedish and English.
- An appendix in English, the Diploma Supplement, describes the programme and its place in the Swedish education system.
- The diploma is dated with the date when the complete application was received by the Student Office. From 1 January 2017, the diploma is dated with the date of issue, when the decision on the degree is taken as a paper diploma.
- As of 1 June 2019, Stockholm University issues digital diplomas. A digital diploma contains the same information
- From 1 January 2024, students can retrieve their issued digital degree certificate in Studentladok.
