Laboratory safety
Working in a laboratory environment at Stockholm University should be safe for both people and the environment. Here you can find rules, procedures, templates and support to help prevent risks and ensure safe working practices in laboratory environments.
In an emergency
- Call 112.
- Warn people nearby and follow local evacuation procedures.
- Inform your immediate manager.
Report incidents and accidents
Report incidents, accidents and other work environment events so that the University can investigate what happened and prevent similar events from occurring.
Submit your report once the immediate situation has been dealt with. Contact your immediate manager if you need support.
Rules and responsibilities
If you work in or are responsible for laboratory activities, you need to be familiar with the applicable rules and how responsibilities are allocated.
The Laboratory Safety Policy applies to everyone working in laboratory environments at Stockholm University. The Rules for Laboratory Safety describe the requirements that laboratory activities must comply with.

Signage and protective ventilation
Protective ventilation
Protective ventilation reduces the risk of exposure to airborne contaminants during laboratory work. This training video explains how protective ventilation works and how it should be used.

Signage
Laboratory premises and other areas with specific risks must be signposted so that staff, visitors and emergency services can quickly identify the risks present.

Export control
Products, technology and knowledge used in laboratory activities may be subject to export controls if they can be used for both civilian and military purposes. The rules may affect research, collaborations and international contacts.
