Alarms

There are many alarm points across the university. Alarms are routed to security guards, who assess the situation and respond if necessary.

If you accidentally trigger an alarm, remain on site until security personnel arrive.

Each department is responsible for:

  • establishing procedures for alarm handling
  • ensuring relevant staff have completed training via the Security Office
  • maintaining an up-to-date contact list of persons to be contacted by security in the event of an incident (e.g. burglary or equipment failure such as freezers)

Threats and bomb threats

In threatening situations, it is important to follow the university’s procedures.

You will receive feedback on whether additional safety measures are required.

The person booking the room must ensure that:

  • a responsible person is present throughout the event
  • the checklist is followed

The checklist applies to all centrally managed premises, including meeting rooms, lecture halls, computer labs, and conference rooms.

  • Avoid having the audience positioned behind you.
  • Ensure there is a safe and secure route to and from the speaking area.
  • Be alert to individuals or groups displaying unusual or threatening behaviour.

Before the event, review the evacuation plan for the room. Check:

  • the address of the room
  • evacuation routes
  • fire extinguishing equipment
  • fire alarm call points
  • defibrillators
  • assembly point

Also ensure that:

  • evacuation routes, signage and equipment are not obstructed
  • furniture layout does not compromise fire safety
  • fire doors are not held open
  • the room is not used beyond its permitted capacity
  • equipment that may generate smoke or heat is used safely

In the event of a fire or fire alarm, the responsible person must evacuate the room via the nearest safe route and direct everyone to the assembly point

Report an incident or near miss

Anyone present on university premises must report incidents and near misses via the IA system. This is an important part of systematic safety wo
