Stockholm University celebrates 150 years
In 2028, Stockholm University will celebrate its 150th anniversary. The sesquicentenary will highlight the university’s history, present and future – what has made us a leading research university with strong roots in Stockholm and significance far beyond the city boundary and the borders of Sweden.
A year of celebration
When Stockholm University was founded in 1878, the aim was to create a modern and open educational institution – a place where knowledge could be developed freely for the benefit of people, society and business. Founded through private initiatives and independent of both the state and the church, the university was an expression of a new, free way of thinking. The ambition was to give more people access to higher education and to contribute to the development of society through research and education.
This free and open academic tradition lives on in today’s university. The anniversary is therefore an opportunity to look back as well as forward – to show how research, education and collaboration continue to shape the knowledge of the future and the university’s continuous development.
During the whole sesquicentenary year there will be a wide range of activities that inspire, engage and arouse curiosity. The university takes the opportunity to disseminate information about its research and showcase its activities to a wider audience. The celebrations will reflect the width and the depth of the university and its position as an educational institution. The activities are aimed at employees, students, alumni, partners and the general public.
As an employee, you are an important part of the anniversary. Join in and contribute to the celebrations as we show where we come from, where we are today and where we are heading.
