Teacher education
Teacher education is closely linked to current research in both subject theory and educational science. Find out about teacher education's organisation, decisions, quality work, and courses.
Organisation
The Board of Human Science
The Board of Human Science is responsible for all teacher education programmes in consultation with the Board of Science.
The Board of Human Science is responsible for strategic planning and coordination of cross-faculty education and research, as well as internal and external collaboration. Additionally, the board makes decisions, responds to referrals, sets the budget for the departments, and recruits teachers.
The Teacher Education Working Committee and the Working Group of the Committee
To assist with teacher education matters, the Board of Human Science has a preparation committee, the Teacher Education Working Committee (LUB), along with an associated working group of the committee (AU).

Programme Councils and Education Council
There are six programmes councils and one education council for teacher education programmes at Stockholm University. The programme councils are responsible for the planning, evaluation, and development of a specific teacher education programme or specialization. It is within the programme councils that discussions take place and actions are taken to ensure and enhance the quality of the teacher education programmes. The Education Council prepares matters for planning, developing, and monitoring the programmes Foreign Teachers’ Further Education (ULV) and Further Education of Teachers (VAL).
The department responsible for each programme leads the programme councils with representatives from various parts of the teacher education programmes: the educational science core, practical teacher training, subject studies, subject didactics, and independent work. The representation, including the number of representatives, sometimes varies between programmes.

Departments responsible for teacher education:
Unit for Teacher Education
At the Section for Cross-faculty Coordination, Elisabeth Alm is Administrator and Johanna Gullberg is Education Manager. Together they form the Unit for Teacher Education, ELU.
The main task of the Teacher Education Unit is to provide support to the Teacher Education Committee, LUB, its working committee, LUA, and the VFU College. They handle curricula for teacher education programs and also curricula within the educational science core, UVK, as well as practical training, VFU. Departments also receive some support and the unit collaborates with other universities in teacher education.

Enhance quality
Review of programs at Stockholm University takes place according to a six-year cycle. The quality enhancement work is for first-cycle, second-cycle, and third-cycle programmes.
The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) has four different types of reviews that form a national system for quality assurance. These reviews are Institutional reviews, Programme evaluations, Thematic evaluations, and Examinations of degree permits.
School placement, VFU
Teacher training programmes include an important component known as School placement or VFU for short. VFU is a compulsory part of all teacher training programmes. It consists of placement courses totaling 30 credits, divided into three to five courses. The courses are based in a preschool or school. This means that students participate in school activities under the supervision of an authorized teacher. In the placement courses, students have the opportunity to develop their ability to plan, implement, and evaluate teaching. They do so with the support of a placement supervisor. At the same time, student teachers gain an insight into the role of a teacher and an understanding of what the different aspects of the teaching profession entail.
To make it all work, there are guidelines and several important functions.
