Logotype
The logotype is the core element of our visual identity and brand. The logo should always be used in all communications where Stockholm University is the sender.
The Stockholm University logotype consists of the emblem and the wordmark. These two parts should always be used together as a unit.
The logo is registered with the Swedish Patent and Registration Office and is protected by copyright law. Misuse of the university’s logotype will be prosecuted.
Variants
Vertical and horizontal
The logotype is available in two formats:
- Vertical
- Horizontal
In print, the vertical version of the logotype should primarily be used.
Colour versions
The logotype comes in three colour versions:
- University Blue
- Black
- White (negative)
Language versions
The logotype is available in two languages:

Formats
The logotype is available in both vector and raster formats. The vector format can be scaled up and down without losing quality. Therefore, use the vector format primarily. Only in exceptional cases should the rasterised version, such as PNG, be used.
All logotype are available in the following formats:
- Vector: EPS, SVG
- Raster: PNG
Correct logotype for the right background
Clear contrasts are crucial for readability. Use the white logo against a dark background and the university blue logotype against a light background. Choose background images that are sufficiently dark or light to create a clear contrast against the logotype.
Free space
The logotype should always be surrounded by a free space, an area where no text, colour, image or decoration should be placed. The free space is always at least the height of the capital "S" in the logotype and applies to both the vertical and horizontal logotypes.
Minimum size
The logotype can be used in various sizes as long as it is larger than the minimum size specified below. This size is required for the details to appear correctly.
Vertical logotype
- At least 20 mm wide
Horizontal logotype
- At least 32 mm wide
Digital
Vertical logotype
- At least 95 pixels wide (Swedish logotype)
- At least 87 pixels wide (English logotype)
Horizontal logotype
- At least 150 pixels wide (Swedish logotype)
- At least 140 pixels wide (English logotype)
Placement
Placement in layout
The logotype should always be placed preferably to the right in the upper or lower corner or in the upper left corner. The logotype is never placed in the lower left corner. This applies to both vertical and horizontal logotypes. The placement should always consider the free zone.
Placement of logotype in relation to unit names
For units (faculties, departments, centres, etc.) within the university, there is a graphic hierarchy that applies when placing the logotype in relation to the unit name.
Placement of logotype in collaborations
For external collaborations with other parties, there are guidelines for how the logotype should be used.
Use by students, etc.
Students have the right to use the university's logotype in internal communication on bachelor's and master's theses after contacting the respective department.

History of the logotype
The emblem in the logotype was originally designed by court graphic artist Karl-Erik Forsberg (1914–1995) in connection with Stockholm University College becoming a state university in 1960. The emblem consists of a torch wrapped in an olive branch combined with the three crowns and a seal inscription. Karl-Erik Forsberg drew inspiration for the design from a ceiling painting in Scheffler Palace (Spökslottet) on Drottninggatan in Stockholm.
This is what Karl-Erik Forsberg himself says about the emblem in an interview from 1994:
– Once the symbols to be included in the emblem were decided, it was up to me to draw the emblem heraldically. The emblem contains several elements that together create balance. Both sides weigh equally. Nothing tilts off balance. The emblem does not bear the mark of randomness and is not tied to any specific time. Formally, it possibly relates most closely to the late 18th century.
