Accommodation for researchers and doctoral students

If you are involved in recruiting and hosting international researchers and doctoral students, here is a collection of information on the University's accommodation options.

Stockholm University can offer housing to international applicants who are

  • doctoral students
  • visiting researchers
  • fixed-term employees whose main occupation is research.

Please note: According to the regulation (2022:1515), applicants may not have been employed at the university for more than six months at the time of signing the contract.

Length of contract

  • Leases can be signed for a minimum of three months and a maximum of one year.
  • The contract can be extended up to a total of two years.
  • Applicants who plan to stay in Sweden for a longer period should apply for external housing as soon as possible.

Housing through the university

Stockholm University Housing offers about 100 furnished apartments in Frescati, Kräftriket and central Stockholm. The apartments are rented throughout the year.

Rent levels

  • Simpler, partially shared accommodation: around SEK 8,000/month
  • Larger apartments for partners or families: around SEK 17,500/month

Rent includes heating, cold and hot water, electricity and wireless internet.

There are also VIP apartments at Östermalm, which are booked by the President or Vice-President.

How to apply

The application is made by the applicant via our housing system Mobility Online.

The following information and documents are required:

  • personal and contact details
  • at least five housing preferences completed and signed
  • employment certificate
  • valid photo identification.

The certificate must be completed in advance and signed by the head of department or administrative manager.

Tips before applying

  • Processing time is 2-6 months.
  • The waiting time depends on the type of accommodation required, the area and the time of year.
  • High demand in August-September and January. Please apply at other times.
  • The University cannot guarantee accommodation. The more preferences you make in your application, the better your chances of getting a contract.
