Organizational chart

The department’s organization is based on three main areas of activity: education, research, and administration. For the operations to function effectively, clear links and collaboration are required both between and within management, the core activities (education and research), and the support function (administration). To ensure this, the department has established various working groups:

The department’s management group serves as an advisory body to the Head of Department and the Deputy Head of Department.

RALV, the local council for work environment and equal conditions, acts as an advisory body to the Head of Department on matters relating to the work environment, equal conditions, and the environment.

Within the area of education, activities are supported by the Teaching Staff Council (LK), the Supervisors’ Council (HK), and the Working Group for Quality Assurance in Public Health Sciences Education (KUF).

The Professors’ Council serves as an advisory body to the Head of Department on strategic issues concerning the direction and development of the department’s research.

Department Management

The department is led by a Head of Department (Prefekt), who is the chair of the Department Board, and a Deputy Head of Department (Ställföreträdande prefekt), who is the vice chair. The Head of Department’s role is to lead and allocate work within the department. The Head of Department has overall responsibility for results and is responsible for the department’s staff and organization.

The department has an Administrative Manager who is responsible for administrative staff and the department’s administrative processes.

The department also has a management group, which serves as an advisory body to the Head of Department, the Deputy Head of Department, and the Department Board. The management group consists of the Head of Department, the Deputy Head of Department, and the department’s Administrative Manager. It also includes the Study directors for basic and advanced studies and doctoral education.

Department Board

The Department Board (Institutionsstyrelsen, IS) is the department’s highest decision-making body, which consists of employees and students at the department. The Department Board makes decisions on financial resources and the budget, as well as on guidelines of fundamental importance, for example regarding teaching and examinations.

The composition of the Department Board ensures that researchers, teachers, technical/administrative staff, and students are represented. Students are represented on the Department Board by one doctoral-level student, one basic level student, and one master’s level student.

The Department Board is led by the Head of Department (chair) or the Deputy Head of Department (vice chair). The members represent staff categories including teachers/researchers and technical/administrative staff.

The Board has decided that the Administrative Manager and the directors of studies for basic, advanced and doctoral education, as well as the directors of the research centers SoRAD and CHESS, are to be standing invitees (ständigt särskilt kallade).

RALV (the Local Council for Work Environment and Equal Conditions)

RALV, det lokala rådet för arbetsmiljö och lika villkor (the Local Council for Work Environment and Equal Conditions), serves as the Head of Department’s advisory body on issues relating to the work environment, equal conditions, and the environment. In addition to the council chair, it includes representatives of teachers, researchers, professors, technical/administrative staff, doctoral students, and students (two representatives: one for bachelor’s students and one for master’s students).

RALV currently has the following representatives:

Research Centres

At the Department of Public Health Sciences, there are two research centres, CHESS and SoRAD, both of which are led by a board and a director. The boards of each centre consist of a chair and four other members, who are appointed for a three-year term by the President of Stockholm University.

Doctoral Student Council (Doktorandråd)

There is a Doctoral Student Council at the department. The chair of the Doctoral Student Council is elected by its members and serves as chair for one year.

Within the Doctoral Student Council, student representatives at the doctoral level are elected to:

• The department’s local RALV group (Council for Work Environment and Equal Conditions)
• The department’s working group for quality-assured education in public health sciences (KUF)
• The Supervisors’ Council (Handledarkollegiet)

Student influence

tudent influence is an important part of the quality assurance work that affects education and students’ situation. At the university, student influence is organized through the student union, faculty councils, student councils, and doctoral student councils.

At the Department of Public Health Sciences, student representatives are included in:

• The Department Board
• The department’s RALV group (Council for Work Environment and Equal Conditions)
• The department’s working group for quality-assured education in public health sciences (Institutionens arbetsgrupp för kvalitetssäkrad utbildning inom folkhälsovetenskap, KUF)
