Speech-to-text, Sunet Scribe (new)
With the Speech-to-text service, you can have audio files transcribed and video files subtitled. The service supports transcription and subtitling in multiple languages.
Description of the service
Sunet Scribe is a transcription solution for higher education institutions and other organisations within the research and education sector. The platform is developed and provided by Sunet and is specifically designed for secure transcription of audio and video material in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Ukrainian.
The Speech-to-text service enables you to transcribe audio files and subtitle video content.
The service includes, among other features:
- Automatic transcription
- Automatic subtitling
- Subtitling via the video service
Each department or equivalent unit that uses the service pays for the work carried out.
Target groups
The primary target groups for the service are:
- Researchers – for example, transcription of interview material
- Communications staff and teachers – who need accessible subtitles for external communication and teaching materials
Publishers of video:
All publicly available videos produced at the University must meet accessibility requirements and must therefore be subtitled.
Teachers:
If the target group (students) includes individuals with hearing impairments or who are deaf, videos used in teaching must be subtitled.
Researchers, doctoral students and other staff:
Transcription of, for example, interviews (audio files).
What the service includes
Sunet Scribe can be used in three ways:
- Via a standalone web interface – where users upload audio or video files for transcription and export them as text or subtitle files
- Via Sunet Play (Kaltura) – for automatic subtitling of lectures and events through REACH integration
- Via the service API – enabling organisations to integrate the service into their own systems
The service supports Swedish, English and several other European languages, and includes speaker identification (diarisation), editing functionality and export in formats such as TXT, RTF, JSON, SRT and VTT.
Getting started
To use the standalone web interface, you need an active University account in order to log in via Single Sign-On (SSO). The first time you log in, your account must be activated. A confirmation email will be sent once the account has been activated.
Subtitling via the video service does not require a specific login.
Support
User support is provided through a user guide in Serviceportalen and instructions available directly in the web interface.
Report issues via Serviceportalen, for example if the service is not accessible or if your account has not been activated within 24 hours.
Pricing and invoicing
Each department or equivalent unit pays for the services used, and invoicing is based on the number of minutes transcribed or subtitled. There are no start-up or base fees.
The supplier invoices IT Services monthly, and IT Services charges departments internally on a quarterly basis.
Pricing model
Sunet offers a fixed-price model for Sunet Scribe. Stockholm University pays a fixed fee of SEK 2,500 per month. In addition, quotas of 4,000 transcription minutes are available for SEK 850 per month. Unused minutes do not carry over and expire at the end of each month.
If additional minutes are required beyond the quota, the cost is SEK 0.50 per minute.
Based on previous usage statistics, the University has chosen to purchase two quotas (8,000 minutes) per month.
The internal pricing model is therefore based on cost per transcribed minute, and the cost per minute may vary between periods depending on usage. During 2026, usage and statistics will be monitored to establish a more optimal model going forward.
