SU film wins award for best science film
The film Chasing the Arctic Melt, produced by Stockholm University, won the category for best science film at the Explorers Festival in Iceland in November. The film takes place aboard the icebreaker Oden and shows life as a researcher on an expedition studying Arctic ice melt.
“Much of the work involved receiving a large and varied amount of material from the expedition and shaping it into a coherent narrative. Together with the researchers, we have been able to highlight both the research and the human perspectives behind it,” says Gunnar Zetterberg, media producer and head of Media Production at the Communications Office.
Media Production is the university’s in-house agency for film and sound, working closely with researchers and departments to showcase the university’s research, education and events – from concept and planning to finished production.
Captures both joy and disappointment
“The film captures a side of science and field work that we normally never get to display. The struggle with disappointment and the joy of success, feelings that typically have no place on scientific conferences. I am glad that we had the opportunity to make this film,” says Michael Tjernström, Professor at Stockholm University and Chief Scientist for ARTofMELT2023 together with Paul Zieger, Co-Chief Scientist and Professor in Environmental Science at Stockholm University.
The expedition was also joined by Stella Papadopoulou, research communications officer at the Department of Environmental Science, who served as a filmmaker and research assistant.
“Without the trust and commitment of the researchers, this film would never have been made. This project is one of the best examples of successful collaboration between filmmakers, communicators and researchers,” she says.
ARTofMELT studies the summer melt season
The rapidly changing Arctic climate is characterised by a delicate balance between heat from the south, most of it in the atmosphere, and energy lost to space by radiation at the top of the Arctic atmosphere. The expedition ARTofMELT2023 (Atmospheric Rivers and the Onset of Sea Ice Melt 2023), led by researchers from Stockholm University, collected unique observations of the processes that govern the transition from winter to summer in the high Arctic, the time when the Arctic ice starts melting.
