Starting a film project

Starting a film project can be new territory for many. Below, we have compiled some tips on what to consider. When you're ready to order, download the brief and answer the questions as best you can. The clearer the framework, the more efficient our collaboration will be.

We want our clients to get the most out of their budget while creating the best conditions for making a good film.

  • Have a clear goal and do your homework. Know what you want to achieve and who your target audiences are. Before the project, we will secure a common vision together.
  • Set a single, realistic goal, and we do mean one. Trying to achieve too many things in one effort can result in a fragmented final product that struggles to reach its target audience.
  • Align the effort with your organisation's core values and overarching goals. If there is no consensus on the need, it is difficult to be clear with us during the ordering process.
  • Communicate needs and wishes (the brief). What are your objectives? Should the film result in a feeling or action?
  • Plan ahead. Understand that film production takes time.
  • Understand the relationship between time, quantity, and cost. It is hard to do something really well if time is tight and there is no budget.
  • Be clear about who has decision-making authority. Ensure there is a single contact point with Media Production and wait for feedback until everyone who needs to approve has given their input.
  • Respect the timelines and fulfil your commitments. Otherwise, it's impossible to keep to the schedule.
  • Be aware that changes after initial approval can change the pricing.
  • Don't be afraid to ask "silly questions." If you don't understand, no one else will either.

Before ordering a production, think through the purpose and message of the film using the template. Once the purpose and message are clear, you are ready to write the brief.

The brief includes questions about what content you expect and how you think the production will be used. Sometimes a meeting is need for clarification. Based on your answers, we then create a realistic cost proposal.

The brief is the framework for most productions and the template includes practical tips on what to consider ahead of time. For example, if we are going out to film on location, the recording team needs access to the venue well in advance to set up all the equipment.

Remember that everyone participating in a film must give their consent in advance.

Once you approve the quote, we start pre-production. We usually begin with a joint planning meeting to lay out the project.

You set the deadline, and we adjust our production to it. You will have the opportunity to view the edited material and provide feedback and any corrections well before the agreed deadline.

What does it cost?

We charge an hourly rate for all our productions, and the price can vary greatly depending on the type of production. You outline your ambitions for the project in the brief, and your answers provide us with a good basis for creating a realistic cost proposal. As soon as you approve the quote, pre-production starts, often with a joint planning meeting.

Briefs and templates

The brief helps both us and you to prepare your production in the best way. Your answers give us an idea of the task, and we can start brainstorming and thinking about resources. The brief is useful whether you get help from us or decide to produce it yourself.

If you are unsure which brief best suits your project, check with us.

Recorded lecture in studio

Recording a full lecture on film is the optimal way for researchers and teachers to quickly and easily reach their students in today's digital world. Students can watch the lecture whenever they want, wherever they want, and as many times as they want.

In a studio lecture, the lecturer comes to the university's TV studio in Södra huset, room F3164. It is fine to bring a presentation on a USB stick or laptop. Images from it will be inserted into the finished video lecture. As always, use large, clear text and make sure you have the rights to use any images.

Then the lecture is delivered directly into the camera, as if it were the audience.

Our video producer does some post-processing. A video link is then delivered to be published in Athena or another platform. If you are not used to standing in front of the camera, we are happy to provide guidance. The idea is to make it easy; you can focus on delivering a good lecture – we handle the rest.

Webcasts and digital events

Do you need help documenting lectures and panel discussions or creating live multi-camera productions for the web or social media? Media Production has the technology and expertise for many different types of solutions.
