Opportunities to recruit researchers to Stockholm University
Global challenges can also present new opportunities. Several research funding organisations have recently announced specific funding for the recruitment of researchers from the US and other countries outside Europe.
Below you will find an overview of current opportunities as well as important things to consider for a possible recruitment.
Grant for recruiting international visiting researchers to Sweden
The Swedish Research Council is now offering 12 one-year grants of SEK 2 million each for the recruitment of outstanding researchers from outside Europe. The aim is to attract international excellence and encourage long-term establishment at Swedish higher education institutions.

Recruiting researchers with EU funding
Recently, the EU launched a new initiative:
Choose Europe: advance your research career in the EU
Closing speech by Ursula Von der Leyen at the ‘Choose Europe for Science' event at La Sorbonne
- A new €500 million package (2025-2027)
- 7-year ERC “supergrant” for the best researchers
- Doubled relocation support for researchers coming to the EU
- Increased support for young researchers through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme: longer contracts, higher remuneration
- Easier visas and faster processes
Through the ERC and Marie Curie, the best researchers will receive funding after a thorough peer review process. Please contact Lars Emrén if you have researchers who want to move to Stockholm and SU and are willing to apply for funding from the ERC. It is also possible to get postdocs from the USA through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme. For these applications we provide support through Viviana Stechina.
SSF Individual Grants 2025 Ingvar Carlsson Award – Across the Atlantic
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research announces a total of 3 five-year grants of SEK 15 million for the repatriation of researchers from the USA. The institution must confirm that a permanent position as professor, assistant professor or associate professor will be offered.

STINT International Postdoc
The aim of the programme is to enhance the quality of Swedish research and higher education by giving researchers who have recently obtained their PhDs the opportunity to pursue a postdoctoral research project at an institution abroad. Participating postdocs are thus offered the chance to experience new academic environments, become more independent and extend their international networks.
There are two versions of the programme:
- STINT International Postdoc for outbound postdocs
- STINT International Postdoc in Sweden for inbound postdocs
Deadline: 12 september
