Postdoc Day Attracted over 200 Participants
The Office for Research, Engagement and Innovation Services organized the annual Postdoc Day once again, an informational event on funding opportunities for early-career researchers. Thursday’s event attracted over 200 participants.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet representatives from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet), Forte, and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. In addition, national contact points for MSCA (Horizon Europe) provided valuable information on European funding opportunities.
"An international postdoctoral training serves as a crucial stepping stone in a researcher’s career, enhancing both their scientific maturity and professional growth" says Maryam Hansson Edalat, Head of the Office for Research, Engagement and Innovation Services.
The event emphasized the importance of securing funding as a way to demonstrate research independence.
"Successfully securing postdoctoral funding indicates that the researcher can independently develop a compelling research proposal, articulate its significance, and convince funding agencies of its merit. This is a crucial step toward establishing oneself as an independent scientist. That´s why we organize this event!", says Maryam Hansson Edalat.
The next Postdoc Day will be held in 2026.
Maryam Hansson Edalat’s three best tips for PhD students considering an international postdoc at Stockholm University:
- Choose the Right Host Institution and Mentor
Selecting a reputable institution and an experienced mentor in your field is crucial. Look for a research group that aligns with your interests, offers strong collaboration opportunities, and has a track record of supporting postdocs. Reach out to potential mentors in advance, discuss research expectations, and ensure they have the resources to support your work. - Secure Funding and Understand Financial Aspects
Applying for external funding (e.g., fellowships, grants) increases your independence and flexibility in choosing your research project and host institution. Look for funding options early, as applications can take months. Also, consider the cost of living, visa regulations, health insurance, and tax implications in your destination country. - Plan for Career Development and Networking
A postdoc abroad is not just about research. Take advantage of networking opportunities, attend conferences, collaborate with researchers outside your immediate group, and develop transferable skills (e.g., grant writing, teaching, leadership). Consider how the experience will position you for your next career move, whether in academia, industry, or other sectors.
