New tool for software inventory
Stockholm University will change its tool for software inventory on 1 April. Users of SU Workstation will have a new agent installed automatically, while others will receive assistance from their local IT contact/"DSA" to install the agent.
The University is replacing its tool for software and hardware inventory, moving from Snow to Xensam. All computers connected to SU Workstation (SUA) will automatically have a new Xensam agent (a small software component) installed.
The transition will take place on 1 April, and the new agent will be installed well in advance. For computers that are not connected to SU Workstation, the local IT contact/DSA is responsible for installing the Xensam agent on all departmental computers.

Why do we use this software?
An inventory tool collects information about computers, software and users. This information is used to:
- maintain an overview of computers connected to the University’s network
- ensure that the University is correctly licensed, i.e. that it does not use more licences than it has paid for, and to identify unused software
- identify who is using University-purchased software and ensure that the correct users have access to it
- detect malicious software
- identify software that has reached end-of-life and is still installed
(Software that has reached end-of-life or end-of-support no longer receives support or updates, including security updates)
The tool is used to meet the requirements set out by the Statskontoret publication Government agencies’ management of software licences.
An inventory agent must be installed on all University computers in accordance with a President decision from 2018.
