Checklist – employee or student has a serious accident on campus

What is important to do if a employee or student suffers a serious accident on campus?

Immediate action

  1. If necessary, take measures to prevent further injury.
  2. If necessary, administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other damage control measures (e.g. anti-haemorrhage or shock measures).
  3. Do not unnecessarily touch anything at the scene. Isolate the scene for investigation.
  4. Call 112 and request ambulance and police.
  5. Inform the Head of Security, Head of Department (equivalent) and Dean. The Head of Security then makes the necessary contacts with the others involved.
  6. The Head of Communications informs the switchboard that only the Head of Department and the Head of Communications will answer questions from the media.
  7. Ensure that someone calls the staff and/or students concerned for information as soon as possible.

Same day

  1. The Head of Department informs the relatives of the incident. The Human Resources Office can assist here.
  2. Gather the staff and/or students concerned and inform them of what has happened.
  3. Inform the switchboard that incoming calls to the injured person should be directed or close the person's phone to incoming calls.
  4. Review the work situation and assess what measures need to be taken in the first stage to allow the organisation to function properly.
  5. If the injury is caused by an accident, inform the Swedish Work Environment Authority in Stockholm. You can also make a report directly in the IA system.

Upcoming days

  1. Provide the same information to the work and student group as you have received yourself to avoid rumours or untrue information. If necessary – offer counselling.
  2. Keep in touch with the injured person.
  3. Make an occupational injury report to Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, according to established procedures (applies to both employees and students).
  4. If a student is injured, a report must also be made to Kammarkollegiet on a special form.

The measures must – unless otherwise stated – be taken by the immediate manager. If a manager is not immediately available, it is important that our employees know what must be done immediately. Guidelines should therefore be made available in an appropriate place and employees and students informed of their content.
