Checklist – threats via email and social media

If you experience harassment or threats via email or social media, support is available. Here you will find information on what to do, who to contact and what support is available to you.

If you are subjected to harassment or threats via email or social media, take the following steps:

  1. Save the material – keep the email or the link to the blog, article comment section or webpage where the threat or harassment appears.
  2. Record the date and time when you received or discovered the message.
  3. Inform your immediate manager.
  4. Contact the security function: sakerhet@su.se

The Security Function can provide guidance on how to proceed, support you in filing a police report if needed and arrange security guard assistance. You can also get support in tracking down the person who has threatened you or get help in contacting those responsible for websites where threats are made.

If you prefer, you may also file a report directly through the incident reporting system.

Handbook on personal security

The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has produced a handbook on personal security that contains advice and support for political activists, but it can also be used by other professionals.

Download the handbook from the Säpo website

Support in connection with media exposure

If you have media contacts — for example related to your research — and as a result risk being exposed to harassment or threats in social media, you can contact the press service at the Communications Office for advice and support.
