Housing for international students
This page is intended for coordinators. Here you will find information on which students can apply for accommodation, how accommodation is allocated, and what you need to do ahead of the start of the semester.
Stockholm University offers approximately 750 accommodation units, of which around 600 are reserved for international students. Accommodation is managed by the Housing Office, part of the Property Management Office.
Who can be offered accommodation?
Accommodation is offered to
- exchange students
- fee-paying students.
The number of available units is limited, which means that not all applicants can be offered accommodation. There is no housing guarantee. Accommodation is allocated according to the priority order below.
Number of beds and types of accommodation
The University offers student accommodation in six areas:
- Albano: approximately 150 apartments (studio apartments and one- to two-bedroom apartments)
- Kungshamra: approximately 40 corridor rooms with a private bathroom and shared kitchen
- Lappkärrsberget: approximately 300 corridor rooms with a private bathroom and shared corridor kitchen
- Nora torg: approximately 30 rooms with a kitchenette and shared kitchen
- Remus: approximately 70 units in varying formats; shared apartments, studio apartments, and family apartments
- Solna: 20 studio apartments with a private kitchenette and bathroom
Information for incoming students
As a coordinator, it is important that you
- inform students that the University offers accommodation and refer them to the English student housing webpage on su.se
- clearly state that there is no housing guarantee – students should therefore also look for accommodation through other channels, and be directed to the English page on su.se: “Finding housing on your own”

Before the start of the semester
Ahead of each semester, during weeks 16 and 38, the Housing Office will send you an email with information and a guide on how students apply for accommodation. This email should be forwarded to incoming students at your department.
The accommodation application opens twice a year: in week 20 or 21, and in week 42 or 43. The application period is open for approximately two weeks, until around 15 May and 15 October respectively.
Accommodation exchange between students
You can help ease the housing situation by matching outgoing and incoming students who can exchange accommodation.
Priority order
In addition to the University’s general prioritisation, each department is responsible for prioritisation within its student categories.

Allocation of accommodation
- Accommodation offers are sent out no later than 30 June (autumn semester) and 30 November (spring semester).
- You will receive a list of students who have been offered accommodation.
- Other students are informed that they are on a waiting list and encouraged to arrange accommodation on their own.
- Only one offer is made – if a student declines, they must arrange accommodation themselves.
Deadline for accommodation lists
Final dates for submitting accommodation lists:
- 17 May (autumn semester)
- 17 October (spring semester)
Allocation begins the day after the deadline.
Summer accommodation
Departments can book accommodation for international students participating in summer courses. Accommodation is often available during the summer. Rent is charged internally.
Termination rules
- Termination before arrival: a fee equivalent to one month’s rent.
- Termination on or after the day of arrival: at least three months’ rent.
- The fee applies regardless of the reason, for example visa issues or personal circumstances.
