The Wallenberg Foundations
Most of the Wallenberg foundations require that applications are internally prioritized by the University and provided with a mandatory support letter from the president or vice president.
This applies for the following foundations:
- Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW)Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation (MAW)
- Berit Wallenberg Foundation (BWS) (required only for larger research projects)
- Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW)
Internal calls and prioritization of applications
Before you start writing your application to any of the foundations above you must first discuss with the head of your department. When a call has been published on the foundation’s web site, the Office for Research, Engagement and Innovation Services makes a time frame for the internal application process at SU in consultation with the vice presidents. After that, we send out a call for “pre applications” to the heads of departments, and publish updated information and application forms on the SU staff web (for some calls the procedure with pre applications is not applied, see the table below for further info).
The internal prioritization is made within the academic areas for Natural Sciences and Human Sciences respectively, where review panels appointed by the vice presidents read and prioritize among the pre-applications based on the criteria of the specific call. Prioritized applicants are then asked to write a full application. Support letters are provided when the application and the budget form have been approved.

Internal process for project applications to MMW and MAW 2026
Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW) mainly supports research projects related to the social sciences.
Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation (MAW) mainly supports research projects related to the humanities.
The foundations' calls for proposals in 2026 are open to all fields of study within the social sciences and humanities. Projects can be applied for by an individual researcher or project group consisting of two to four researchers who collaborate around a coherent scientific question. Projects normally have a budget of between SEK 3 million and SEK 9 million with a duration of three to five years. Up to 20% of the granted amount may be used for indirect costs and rent.
Project calls from MMW and MAW are preceded by an SU-internal application process which is coordinated by the Office for Research, Innovation and Engagement Services (REIS). You apply on a certain pre-application form that has been sent out to the heads of the departments. The filled in form shall be sent by the head/equivalent to sofia.irinarchos@su.se on 23 January 2026 at the latest. Both foundations’ deadlines are on April 1st 2026.
Pre‑applications shall be in English and will go through an internal evaluation process at the University’s academic area for Human Sciences, where prioritized applicants may complete their proposals and will be provided with the certification signed by rector. The selection committee’s evaluation of pre‑applications will be clearly connected to the guidelines for the calls which are to be found on respective foundation’s home page:
MMW: https://mmw.wallenberg.org/anslagsguide/riktlinjer
MAW: https://maw.wallenberg.org/en/funding-guide/guidelines
Important dates and deadlines:
23 January Deadline for pre-applications to Sofia Irinarchos at REIS (submitted by the head of the department/equivalent)
11 February Info to the researchers whether or not their application has been prioritized (preliminary date)
30 March Certification signed by rector will be sent to the applicants (latest date)
1 April Latest date for researchers to submit their applications through respective foundation’s E‑application system
