Create a Data Management Plan
A data management plan (DMP) is intended to support you as researchers and PhD students during the research process and ensure that your research and data management practises follow relevant laws and regulations. Stockholm University offers the tool DMPonline to create, share, and update digital data management plans.
Many research funders require that you write a data management for your research project. You should be aware of and keep to any guidelines set up by your funder.
The Stockholm University Open Science Plan (link) recommends that a data management plan is created, updated and preserved for each research project.
DMPonline
In DMPonline, you find templates based on requirements from various research funders, such as the Swedish Research Council and Horizon Europe. A locally developed template (SU-VR) contains machine-readable, multiple-choice questions, which facilitates the entry of information and preservation of the data management plan
A data management plan is a "living" document that should be revised and kept up to date during the entire project. The tool is in English, but you can choose to write your plan in English or Swedish, as long as your funder does not require a certain language.
Instructions for using DMPonline
Follow the steps below to create your data management plan.
The first time you log in, you will need to create an account and connect it to your Stockholm University email and SU-login. You retain access to your account and can easily change your affiliation and email in the future, in case you move institutions.

- Click on “Sign in with your institutional credentials”.
- Log in with your SU-ID and password.

- Expand each section and answer the questions they contain. The questions will vary depending on your choice of template.
- Regularly click on “Save” as the system does not save entries automatically.
- You find guidance that you have chosen, and any comments made by project contributors, in the right-hand margin. Comments will not appear in the actual plan.
Resume or update a plan
