Swedish research funders

Nearly half of the university’s funding for research and doctoral education come from external grants. These grants come from research councils, private research foundations and public foundations among others. One this page we list the largest of these funders.

The Swedish Research Council (VR)

The Swedish Research Council (VR) is by far Stockholm University's largest external research funder. They contribute almost half a billion SEK per year to research at the university.

The Wallenberg Foundations

With the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation at the top, the Wallenberg Foundations annually contribute more than SEK 200 million to research at Stockholm University.

Formas

With a focus on sustainable development, Formas annually contributes around SEK 100 million to Stockholm University's research on the environment, areal industries and community building.

Riksbankens Jubileumsfond

Riksbankens Jubileumsfond promotes and supports humanities and social science research. In 2021 with SEK 90 million to Stockholm University.

Sida

Sida, works to reduce poverty and oppression in the world. In 2021, they contributed just over SEK 80 million to the university's research.

The Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF)

The Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, is a free, independent actor within the public research funding system. In 2021, SSF contributed SEK 23 million to research at Stockholm University.

Göran Gustafsson prizes

Göran Gustafsson's foundation for scientific and medical research annually awards large multi-year grants to researchers in molecular biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and medicine.

The Henrik Granholm Foundation

Every year, the Henrik Granholm Foundation distributes funds for the purpose of supporting scientific research and education at Stockholm University.

Following the proposal of the Rector of Stockholm University, the Henrik Granholm Foundation distributes funds annually in order to support scientific research and education at the university.

The foundation's board decides at its annual meeting on how the funds are to be distributed for the following academic year. There is no longer any announcement of funds, but the university instead applies for funds for special strategic investments.

Prisma-apply for funding

Prisma is the e-service for the Swedish Research Council (VR), Forte, Formas, Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Swedish National Space Agency, and Skolforskningsinstitutet. Prisma will be used for applications, the review process and for reporting.
