EU funding

The EU Commission is one of Stockholm University’s major research funders. The following internal routines apply to all EU projects.

Why are EU projects special?

Since EU projects are legally binding for the whole University, they are subject to the following rules:

  • All projects must have the approval of the head of department.
  • All agreements are signed by the head of Office for Research, Engagement and Innovation Services (REIS) (on delegation from the President). An exception applies to Erasmus+ which is handled by Student Services.
  • REIS provides legal advice when contracts are set up (Grant agreement, Consortium agreement).
  • The use of the EU emblem in the context of EU programmes 2021-2027

REIS offers the following support:

  • Tips and advice before and during the process of writing your application.
  • Review of the project budget.
  • Assistance with administrative information during the application process and contract negotiations.
  • Guidance during the project, e.g. in connection with project reports.

Procedure for EU-funded research projects

The procedure applies to research projects which are funded through grants from the European Union, primarily the European Commission’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, where Stockholm University enters into an agreement with the European Union.

Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the EU's framework program, which allocates EUR 95.5 billion to research and innovation during the seven-year period 2021-2027. There are great opportunities for financing individual project grants, mobility initiatives and support for infrastructure and research in thematically oriented consortia.

Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.

Horizon 2020

The Stockholm Trio has established an office in Brussels, co-located with the Stockholm Region EU Office.

The Brussels representation of the Trio consists of one person in Brussels and one person each from the three universities based in Stockholm to secure efficient communication within the universities. The main objective of the activities in Brussels is to increase the visibility of the Stockholm trio in Europe and to promote the universities' participation in various EU-funded research, innovation and education programs through proactive work. The activities will mainly be:

  • Networking & information gathering
  • Proactive work in specific areas
  • Raise the profile of the Stockholm trio in Brussels
  • Interaction and communication with home organisation.
