The main aim of this workshop is to increase the knowledge of the possibilities for education and research at Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO), giving the chance for more departments and scientists to benefit from the collaboration.

The main meeting, including field visits in the local area, will be held during 14-17 of March. If you chose to stay longer you can go on additional field trips in the Peloponnese, get to know the local area more and work at the station. The longer stay is planned until March 21.

Costs for travel and accommodation will be covered by NEO.

Programme

Saturday March 14
15.15 Arrival at Kalamata airport
17.00 Arrive at NEO
19.30: Dinner at a local restaurant (walking distance)
Sunday March 15
8.00 – 9.00: Breakfast at the station
9.30 – 11.00: Presentation round of the workshop participants + presentation of the station
11.30 – 16.00: Excursion in the local area: Gialova lagoon, Paleokastro, Nestors cave, Voidokilia beach. Including field lunch.
19.30: Dinner
Monday March 16
8.00 – 9.00: Breakfast at the station
9.30 – 13.00: Field visits at Methoni meteorological station and the experimental plots of the SALAM-MED project (studies of different types of olive cultivation). Including field lunch.
14.00 – 17.00: Discussions
Tuesday March 17
Leave NEO (latest around 14) for the participants that chose a short stay. Optional activities for the guests that are staying until March 21.

Accommodation

NEO station has 10 rooms, and in total 28 beds. There are 8 rooms with three beds and 2 rooms with 2 beds. Our aim for the workshop is that all that wish shall have single rooms and that participants that are new to the station have priority to stay at the station. There are showers in all rooms and bed linen are provided. If the station cannot host all participants, we will find additional accommodation close to the station.

About the Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO)

Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) is a Mediterranean hub for research and education with the aim to create a more sustainable future under a changing climate.

The observatory was founded in 2009, by Stockholm University, Academy of Athens, and Tourism Enterprises in Messinia (TEMES), Greece.

The station is situated in a rural area on southwestern Peloponnese, Greece. Surrounding the station there is a Natura 2000 protected area with a lagoon of high biological value and large sand dunes. In the wider area the landscape is mainly covered by olive-orchards. Close to NEO there are several sites of archaeological, historical and geological interest. At present the tourism industry is developing in the area.
