Promotion to Senior Lecturer

There are several requirements that need to be met for promotion to Senior Lecturer. This is what is required by the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Eligibility, assessment criteria, clarifications and additions

The eligibility and criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer are stated in:

The Faculty of Social Sciences have made additions and clarifications which are stated below. Several of these are based on the guidelines for experts concerning promotion to Senior Lecturer (SU FV-1729-24).

Teaching and learning in higher education

At least 15 credits in teaching and learning in higher education is required. This requirement is usually met by completing Professional development course, UL1 and Professional development course, UL2. These courses are offered by the Center for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL). Courses from other universities of the same scope can be considered equivalent. Applicants who do not have 15 credits in teaching and learning in higher education, may be given the opportunity by the Appointments Board to supplement their application by additional courses/workshops offered by CeUL.

Scientific merits

The applicant must have shown significant progress in research during their time as an Associate Senior Lecturer and be established in the national or international research community. Significant progress is defined as published or otherwise documented and verified independent research efforts equivalent to at least two-thirds of a high-quality doctoral thesis. If the applicant's research time constitutes more than 51% of their position, the requirement is proportionally increased according to the percentage of research time.

Pedagogical merits

Special attention should be given to the scope, breadth and depth, quality, and current pedagogical knowledge. In addition to experience in teaching, typically at both undergraduate and advanced levels, it includes the ability to:

  • Plan, initiate, lead, and develop education and teaching
  • Link teaching to research in the relevant subject area
  • Convey engagement and interest in the subject area and activate students in independent learning
  • Communicate with the students, and from a holistic perspective have the capacity for renewal

In addition, experience of supervision and the extent of educational material production should be considered. The basis for assessing pedagogical skills includes documented and verified pedagogical merits, as well as reflection on one's pedagogical activities, showing motives, ambitions, and results of development work.

Collaboration skills

Consideration should be given to documented and verified collaborations within research, teaching, and administration. In research, this is demonstrated through participation in larger research projects as the primary or co-applicant, research networks, or other research-related collaborations. In teaching, this can for example be demonstrated through pedagogical development work in the teaching team or similar, or course responsibility for a course involving other teachers. In administration, this is shown through documented experience of research or education-related trust assignments.
