Reporting environmental deviations and submitting improvement suggestions

Environmental deviations should be reported in the university's case management system. The purpose of reporting deviations is to correct and prevent negative environmental impact.

An environmental deviation is a departure from environmental legislation, the university's own rules and routines, or the university's environmental management system. These should be reported in the IA system.

Examples of environmental deviations

Negative environmental impact:

  • Chemical spills in a laboratory
  • Fuel spills during vehicle refueling
  • Inadequate routines leading to emissions or energy consumption that could have been avoided, such as failure to close a fume hood after use

Handling of chamicals that poses risks:

  • Missorted waste or lack of a waste container in an environmental station
  • Inadequate storage and labeling of environmentally hazardous chemicals
  • Lack of containment for liquid chemicals

Deviations from binding documents (e.g., environmental legislation, ISO standard, university's own requirements):

  • Absence of a local environmental action plan (not applicable to administrative departments)
  • First aid kit containing expired bandages
  • Environmental requirements not met during the procurement of personal vehicles

Examples of non-environmental deviations:

  • Occupational health and safety issues
  • Accidents that do not lead to environmental deviations (reported as incidents/occupational injuries)
  • Issues pertaining to problems in the local environment as opposed to environmental issues, such as a room being too cold (reported as maintenance request in the Service Portal)
  • Suggestions for improvements (see below)
  • Environmental questions (see below)

Suggestions for improvement and questions

Suggestions for improvement are ideas and requests on how environmental work can be improved and how negative environmental impact can be reduced on the central level. Examples include:

  • More or larger bike rooms
  • Easier booking of international train travel
  • Systematic reuse of furniture
  • Suggestions on how to reduce energy consumption

Suggestion for improvements such as these should be reported in the IA system.

To report, select the "Environment" category, and in the next step, you can choose either "Environmental Deviation" or "Improvement Suggestion."

Questions about the university's environmental work should be emailed to miljo@su.se
